Chapter Seven

After two days in bed and another three of lounging around on the sofa while Chey waited on him hand and foot, Quinn felt mostly back to normal. He felt colder, and he tired more easily, but considering he’d almost died, he figured it was to be expected.

“Chicken noodle,” Chey announced as he entered the living room with a bowl of soup. “Extra carrots and loaded with sodium, just the way you like it.”

Snuggling down into the cushions, Quinn pulled the blanket tight around his shoulders and reached out to take the bowl. “You really don’t have to baby me, but thank you.”

“Eat your soup.” Bending, Chey kissed the top of his head before flopping down on the sofa beside him. “What are you watching?”

“Oh, nothing interesting. You can change the channel if you want.” Honestly, he didn’t have a clue what he’d been watching. For the past ten minutes, he’d simply been staring blankly into space while his thoughts pulled him in a dozen different directions. “Why would someone want to kill me?” he blurted.

“I don’t know, sweetheart, but I’m going to find out.” Chey lacked his usual vehemence, but his tone held an iciness that sent a chill down Quinn’s spine. “You’re looking to hire someone to work the day shift, right?”

“Well…yes.”

Quinn didn’t know where the conversation was headed, but he already didn’t like it. When his usual morning guy had just stopped coming into work one day, there hadn’t been a replacement. Seeing an opportunity to put distance between him and Chey, Quinn had decided to take the open position instead of hiring someone new. Since he’d been home in bed all week, his regular employees had been pulling double shifts, and no one was happy about it.

“What would you say if I told you I might know a guy?”

“I guess it depends. Does he have any experience?”

“I don’t know. He’s a quick study, though.”

Quinn sighed as he leaned forward to set his soup on the coffee table. “Chey, just spit it out. What’s going on?”

Chey’s eyebrows drew together, creasing his forehead, and the dark bags under his bloodshot eyes nearly broke Quinn’s heart. Clearly, the wolf hadn’t been sleeping much, and now that Quinn really looked at him, he could easily tell Chey had lost a fair amount of weight. Guilt ate away at Quinn’s soul, but he didn’t know how to make it right. No matter what he tried, he always ended up doing the wrong thing.

Selfishly, he’d fallen into bed with Chey, and he’d been more worried about his own happiness than helping the shifter find a mate. Then he’d tried to correct that mistake by distancing himself and erecting a wall between them. Obviously, that hadn’t worked, either, and worst of all, Quinn had been so wrapped up in himself he’d missed all of the signs. Gods, he had no idea how long Chey had been suffering, but by the looks of him, it had been well before the poisoned latte.

“Chey, when’s the last time you slept?”

“I’m fine.
